CN XII Course
The hypoglossal nerve exits the brainstem medulla at the ventrolateral sulcus. It then exits the skull through the hypoglossal canal. It passes between the internal carotid artery and the internal jugular vein on its way to innervate the tongue musculature. Hypoglossal nuclei are located in the medulla.
