CN III Pathology

The oculomotor nerve may be damaged in basilar skull fracture or uncal herniation as a result of increased intracranial pressure. Masses or tumors in the cavernous sinus, syphillis or aneurysms may also lead to compression. Injury to CN III results in ptosis, inferolateral displacement of the ipsilateral eye (which can present as diplopia or strabismus) and mydriasis.
