CN IX Pathology
Due to its close proximity to CN X and CN XI, an isolated CN IX neuropathy is rare. It results from tumor or aneurysm in the posterior fossa or jugular foramen which causes numbness of ipsilateral pharynx and dysphagia with absent gag reflex.
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is similar to trigeminal neuralgia in that it is most commonly idiopathic. It presents as an intense throat pain which radiates to the ear and can occur with swallowing.
