Velocity of sound is a function of the tissue it traverses. In most soft tissue, this is on the order of 1540 m/s. Because the propagation of sound requires a physical medium, ultrasound doesn’t’ work well in a vacuum. Remember, in space, no one can hear you scream, and you can’t get your gallbladder ultrasound either.
