Another pitfall occurs when ultrasound is used in tissues with many acoustic interfaces. As a result of reverberation, the tissue appears to be of a homogeneous echotexture, and masses can be overlooked. In this example, the liver is very echogenic due to cirrhosis. No discrete masses are seen, but the liver surface is lobulated.
