This is the sonographic appearance of the pancreas. The liver is seen in the near field, and is used as an acoustic window. The pancreas sits immediately anterior to the splenic vein. Note the shadowing from gas in the duodenum.This can be problematic when imaging a patient with an ileus (such as in pancreatitis).
