Professional Board Certification
| Radiation Health Officers and Radiation Specialists are encouraged to complete professional
board certification. The American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) is a two-part written examination that comprehensively evaluates
a candidate's level of knowledge in ionizing and non-ionizing health physic topics. Successful completion of these examinations
demonstrates a broad-based understanding of the health physics profession; the title of Certified Health Physicist is awarded by
the ABHP. The American Board of Radiology (ABR) includes both oral and written examinations. Three areas of certification
are offered: Diagnostic Radiology, Radiological Therapeutic Physics, and Nuclear Medicine. Successful completion of the
examinations demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the medical physics profession; the title of ABR is awarded. Some
RHOs are former X-ray Technicians and hold professional certification with the National Registry of Radiation Protection
