Radiological Systems Performance Evaluation Course (RSPEC)
| The RSPEC provides at least 40 hours of didactic and practical training for prospective
surveyors of Level I radiological imaging equipment. This equipment is identified in the Navy Radiological Systems Performance
Evaluation Manual (Navy Environmental Health Center Technical Manual, NEHC-TM 6470.03-1). The course is primarily offered to Navy Radiation
Health Officers, Radiation Safety Officers, Radiation Health Technicians, and X-ray Technicians. Prospective students in the
Army, Air Force and Public Health Service may also attend. Graduates apply as a Basic X-ray Surveyor (Level I) with the
Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (Radiation Health Specialty Leader), via the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (formerly the
Navy Environmental Health Center). The Radiation Health Staff at National Naval Medical Center and Uniformed Services University
of the Health Sciences execute RSPEC. Students receive at no cost The Essential Physics of Medical Imaging
(Bushberg, 2nd Edition) and copies of all lecture slides. They complete laboratories using general radiographic units (fixed
and portable x-ray units), dental radiographic units, and general fluoroscopic units. They also evaluate film processor;
darkroom; and computed and digital radiography quality control programs. Lecture and laboratory concepts are reinforced with
homework assignments. Students are given a final written test and a final practical test. The links in the left margin give
